The CD starts with “Payday”, an upbeat tune about getting paid at the end of an old cattle drive in the late 1800’s. "Cool Clear Water” and “Tumblin Tumbleweed” are songs the Sons of the Pioneers made famous during the era of the silver screen cowboys.  "The Wayward Wind”, “Whoopie Ti Yi Yo” and “Cattle Call” are songs about life in the old west and “cowboying” on those cattle drives.  Those Wayward winds would have a way of making the riders homesick while “Whoopie Ti Yi Yo” describes a day in the life, which is followed up by a song to settle the herd in for the night with “Cattle Call”.

"Back in the Saddle Again” is an all time favorite that was used by Gene Autry as his theme song.  "Colorado” was covered by Merle Haggard in the 70’s and as a Colorado band, we’re proud to do a rendition of our own.  “Long Tall Texan” is a fun song that was covered by Lyle Lovett and the Beach Boys.  "Red River Valley” describes a part of the old west that is beautiful and majestic.  Thanks to Vaughn Monroe and many others, “Ghost Riders in the Sky” has become such a famous tune that even the Blues Brothers used it in their movie.

The Making of ‘Round the Campfire

This is the first of several CDs to be released in the next couple of years that feature the award winning Jim Hyatt Band as the “Up the Creek Cowboys”.  Bruce Nunemaker has been with Jim from the beginning and is an integral part of the team.  His lead vocals on “Red River Valley” and “Long Tall Texan” are just a small sample of Bruce’s talents.  His voice on “Colorado” which he does as a duet with Jim is another vision of what is to come with more duets from the band.  Bruce is a 2007 inductee into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and his rock and roll roots are what make the Jim Hyatt Band so versatile.  Bruce doesn’t accept limitations in his music, he just takes every song as a challenge and conquers it.

Randy Ketelsen joined the band five years ago, catapulting it into new harmonies with its own distinct sound.  He is the reason the trio came to be.  Bruce and Jim have been complimented on their harmonies for years but Randy is why the trio melded into the unit it has become.  It wasn’t long after Randy decided he wanted to play music again, after taking a thirty year vacation from performing, that his wife surprised him with his Hofner (Beatle) Bass.  It is not often you will see him without it strapped on his shoulder, which brings a smile to his face.  Randy is responsible for the echo harmony on “Ghost Riders” that he and Bruce deliver so delicately to round off this tune.

Chuck Lettes performed with Jim back in the 1980’s and has now returned.  His steel guitar talents are always evolving.  He is one of the few steel players who not only can play any style of music; he changes his style to compliment it.  His dynamic rock and roll style stands out with the best. His distorted slide steel sounds better than any slide guitar player out there and on this CD he is playing his “Fry Pan” steel.  This is a lap steel made of metal that cuts like a Dobro and is as mellow as any lap steel.  I have never heard any one play those eerie sounds that he does on “Ghost Riders” while keeping it mellow and pretty on “Red River Valley” and “Colorado”.

Pete Luthman was a great find for the Jim Hyatt Band.  We met him in another well known Colorado based band but we found out his roots, too are in rock and roll.  You’ll hear him lead off many of our classic rock songs along with several country tunes with that strong lead vocal sound.  Pete is a singer who happens to play drums and play drums he does well.  He is responsible for driving our sound. His train style beat on “Ghost Riders” kicks off and keeps it strong.  Other songs he chose to embellish as needed with just enough rhythm to make the arrangements special.
